This workshop provides specific instructional strategies for helping students in diverse classrooms meet course requirements. Our goal is to improve academic success for all without watering down the curriculum.
Adapting is the redesign of curriculum and instruction to improve academic success for all students in a heterogeneous classroom. Instead of simply assigning less work or giving students more time for assignments, we view adapting as getting directly into curriculum planning, instruction and assessment to improve learning.
During the workshop, participants will work in their own curriculum. Strategies are relevant to social studies, science, health, English language arts, and math, and include applications to other subject areas that require students to read, take notes, complete written assignments, and pass tests.
Middle through high school (grades 5–12) general education teachers, specialists, and administrators—individuals or PLCs working to help all students meet general education course requirements. Participants will apply strategies appropriately to their grade level and content.
Participants will bring curriculum materials to begin planning and refining instruction for the first nine weeks of school.
Registration includes three days of training, practice, and instructional planning, plus training materials. Also included are a continental breakfast and a buffet lunch each day of training. (Cost: $450.00)
Learn to teach The Third Quest curriculum with fidelity and high success. This comprehensive (vs. targeted) intervention program provides teacher-directed instruction in vocabulary, word study, fluency, content knowledge (the scientific method and ancient history), comprehension, and study skills. It’s a good fit for students who have plateaued and are not motivated by computer-based solutions.
Before Registering: This highly effective intervention has been proven to work at both Tiers 2 and 3 when implemented with fidelity. Surf the Third Quest website. Download the Program Overview, view short videos, and pre-post assessment results. Not sure if the program will fit your needs? Request a web meeting before signing up.
Comments From Intervention and Special Education Teachers Using The Third Quest
- Increased scores—students feel measured growth and are transferring to content classes. (Middle School)
- Even my eighth-grade students are so engaged—especially (and surprisingly so) with the Word Study. (Middle School)
- My students now LOVE to read out loud. Their comprehension and writing summaries have greatly improved. They have developed perseverance. Oh, and they love using the new vocabulary words they have learned. I can’t say enough good things about this program. (Middle School)
- [My] students have all written about their growth in the program, a sense of community that it builds, and the goals they have set for the future. The program works! I attest to seeing great changes and suggest it for students with dyslexia and below-grade-level readers. (High School)
Comments From Intervention and Special Education Students in The Third Quest
- I think The Third Quest should be a movie or maybe there should be more books. (Middle School)
- In elementary school, I had trouble reading and I hated it when I had to read out loud at school. The Third Quest has made me read more fluently, and I don’t hate reading out loud anymore. (Middle School)
- To begin with, I would like to say that this program helped me persevere through some of the hardest times in my life. In the past few months I went from 100 words per minute to 130 words per minute. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but imagine a kid who can’t spell very well and who can’t read very well being able to spell better and read faster. It’s the best feeling ever. (High School)
Educators—teachers, specialists, instructional assistants, literacy coaches, and administrators working to treat/remediate reading deficits (fifth grade through high school)
The two-day training session includes training materials, a Third Quest Program Guide, and ongoing follow-up during the 2020-2021 school year. Participants will also be provided a continental breakfast and a buffet lunch each day of training. (Cost:$350.00)
